Year-end payment and purchase decisions can affect when a business reports income and deductions. The following six areas depend on your accounting method, entity type, cash flow, records, and deadlines.
1. Prepay expenses using the IRS safe harbor
IRS regulations contain a safe-harbor rule that may allow cash-basis taxpayers to prepay and deduct qualifying expenses up to 12 months in advance.
For a cash-basis taxpayer, qualifying expenses can include items such as lease payments, rent payments, and insurance premiums when the rules are met.
2. Review billing timing
Cash-basis businesses sometimes review year-end billing timing. This should be done carefully and consistently with business reality, cash needs, and professional advice.
3. Equipment purchases
The OBBBA reinstated 100 percent bonus depreciation and increased limits on Section 179 expensing for some property. Equipment must be purchased and placed in service before year-end to affect 2025.
4. Credit-card payments and deduction timing
For some cash-basis businesses, the date a qualifying purchase is charged can affect deduction timing. Entity structure and reimbursement rules matter, especially for corporations.
5. Deductions in a loss year
If business deductions exceed business income, you may have a tax loss. Keep documenting valid deductions instead of leaving them out just because the business had a rough year.
6. Review Qualified Improvement Property
Qualified Improvement Property can be eligible for faster cost recovery when the facts fit. If the improvement needs to affect 2025, it generally must be placed in service before year-end.
